Happy Heart Month

Warwick during his ECG
As February is Heart Month we thought we’d share our experience of attending a Cardiac Screening event hosted by CRY and very kindly funded by Tonbridge Angels Football Club back in January.
According to the information provided by CRY (www.c-r-y.org.uk),  in 80% of cases of young sudden cardiac death there are no prior symptoms of a heart defect, which is why they provide free and subsidised screening to young people aged between 14 and 35 who are unable to access these services on the NHS.
The event was easy to book online and a handy text reminder was sent prior to the event to remind us of our appointment time and the need to bring our consent forms along to make the process run smoothly at the venue.
On arriving at the venue we were welcomed by a lovely lady at the desk who checked us in and ensured that nothing had changed since we filled in our medical questionnaires.  She then explained the process and directed us to a waiting area where we were to be met by the technicians.
After a very short wait and a quick check of measurements we were taken into a private area with a technician who explained the process. Sensors were then stuck on our chests, arms and ankles before being connected to an ECG machine to record our heart’s rhythm and activity for a short while. The stickers were then removed (they’re made for this purpose so it’s not like peeling off a stubborn plaster!) and the printout and information passed over to the doctor.
Another very short wait and we were welcomed into the doctor’s room to meet the doctor attending the session. In this room we discussed the previous medical history of ourselves and our family members, before finding out the results of our ECG’s.
A clean bill of heart health for us both was reassuring and means that we are more confident to step up the training for the upcoming season.
If anyone is thinking of attending a session please visit the CRY website (www.c-r-y.org.uk) to find out more and book yourself in.
We’d like to thank CRY, Tonbridge Angels FC and all of their supporters and fundraisers for making these sessions possible.
Keep Tri-ing
Warwick & Jodie 😊

About Us Welcome to our new blog! We are based in the South of England and participate in a range of triathlons from Super-Sprint to Olympic distance across the UK. Warwick is currently training hard for a number of Olympic and Sprint distance triathlons in the coming season, aiming to improve on the successes of last year, whilst Jodie is taking a much more relaxed approach, with no races in the calendar apart from a couple of charity 10ks. We hope that this blog will give you an insight into our training (which Jodie will hopefully start soon!) and give some reports and reviews of the races that we participate in. Please let us know if there is anything you'd like to see on this blog and we will do our best. We are by no means experts, picking up advice from a range of coaches and other triathletes we've been lucky enough to train and race with as well as from the, sometimes challenging, lessons we've learnt along the way! We hope you enjoy our blog. Ke...

Hills, Drills and Racing Thrills

As you will have seen in our last blog post, the last couple of weeks have been extremely busy with new jobs, routines and locations to adjust to. Now 2 weeks into our new life on the south coast, Warwick has begun to find his feet within the new Triathlon and running clubs. Although he is now more settled, the adaptation to the new training location hasn't been easy; Essex by its nature is flat, seriously flat, unless you repeatedly go up and down the same 2km hill at a interesting but not impossible 9% incline, there really isn't much to train with. Our new location, however, is a beautiful beast of an entirely different nature, full of technical descents through tight country lanes and climbs that last for miles - the perfect location to improve on those ascent skills. This change hasn't been easy, for running long hills hasn’t always been a strength Warwick could rely on but with new training groups these skills are being slowly drilled in and will soon bec...

Race Number 1 - The Chilly One at Grafham Water

'I'm sure it will be warmer when we get there!' This bank holiday weekend saw the first of Warwick's races as he attempts to qualify for a spot on the Team GB Age-Group Squad After making the 100 mile trip up to Cambridgeshire excitement was high and so were the nerves for what lay ahead. As is becoming customary for Warwick's races the weather the few days before had been "varied" which meant that as we tried to prepare for the race every eventuality had to be considered. When driving the route the day before it was clear that, although quick, given the route would be effected by any degree of wind pacing would be the key to a well executed race.  The night before a race is always a strange one, everyone else would get an early night; make sure that they are well rested and relaxed for the following day. Warwick however does things a different way, in a strange fashion a shut down happens in his mind. A different mindset takes over, o...
